DPW Mechanic/Fleet Manager

SUMMARY:

This is a position that requires a skilled mechanical aptitude and be highly organized with good quantitative ability for the position under the direction of the Department of Public Works Supervisor and Administrator of Public Works. It is essential that this position work in harmony and cooperation with the needs of and efforts of the Department of Public Works crews and Village of Rothschild staff during the course of the year and at budget.

The Fleet manager position is responsible for the mechanical repair on a large variety of automotive, heavy equipment, small engine, snow and ice equipment, and any other machinery or power tools owned by the Village. The Fleet Manager is also responsible for maintaining detailed records of vehicle servicing, inspection, scheduling regular vehicle maintenance to ensure operational efficiency, and excellent leadership and decision-making skills among other duties. The employee in this position may also perform maintenance work on public grounds and/or buildings, operate trucks and equipment, assist other department personnel on an as-needed basis, or do any other public works duties assigned by the Administrator of Public Works. This position is required to assist the Department of Public Works in all snow operations under the direction of the DPW Working Supervisor or the designee.

Mechanical maintenance work involves performing all types of routine maintenance, body repair and corrosion control, and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment, as well as specialized gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, and any other machinery and equipment owned by the Village. Fabrication of parts or equipment may be required on occasion. When necessary, this position may be asked to assist other Village employees in tasks not directly related to the mechanic’s job description. The mechanic shall be familiar with the operation of the Village’s equipment.

This individual is responsible to be involved in the Village’s Equipment Capital Improvement Plan, annual equipment, maintenance budgeting for the purchasing of mechanical equipment, maintaining vehicle servicing records, coordinate, and manage programs from acquisition to disposal to maximize the Village’s efficiency, and operate within budget.
Work may involve the supervision of other employees within the mechanical or Fleet Management areas. Work is reviewed by observation and inspection of work in progress and upon completion. The Department of Public Works Supervisor and Administrator of Public Works, or designee, supervises and evaluates job performance.
